Our Facilities
When we set out to build our new facility, we were sure of one thing. The current production method in Australia of “commit-to-pack” was generating unneeded inventory that would sit in boxes until sold, obviously this affects fruit quality and the consumers eating experiences. 9mile roamed the world looking for the right solution, we visited the USA, New
Zealand and all over Europe before choosing an Italian company “Longobardi” to partner us in our grand vision. Based in the stunning “South Tyrol” town of Bolzano, Longobardi together with 9mile and the Dutch company Greefa, set about building and implementing a packing solution specifically designed for Australian conditions and market demands.

Apples are gently transferred into plastic bins to be “packed fresh” when customers order

Our System
Arrival
Orchard picked fruit is taken to the pre-sizing section of our facility. Here the apples start their journey, apples gently float out of wooden bins and make their way through a series of water ways in preparation of being assessed.
Selection
Each apple is photographed 80 times by the Greefa system and a decision is made on its future based upon parameters such as colour, size, shape, blemish etc. The system can even throw out apples that are no good on the inside!
Packing
The 4 packing lines are a sight to behold! all the efficiencies created by the pre-sizer come together to provide cost savings that previously were not available to us. The lines can produce up to 10,000 units in an 8 hour shift while simultaneously packing 4 different varieties at once.
